“You know how I am
scorned, disgraced and shamed; all my enemies are before you.
Scorn has broken my heart and has left me helpless; I looked for
sympathy, but there was none, for comforters, but I found none.”
Psalm
69:20
I’ll never forget
the day when the school my kids attended had just treated the carpet with a lice
shampoo due to a lice outbreak among the students.
As I went to pick up my kids at school, I mentioned to another mother
that I couldn’t go in the building due to the pesticide that had been used on
the carpet because it would make me ill. I
remember how she just looked at me and laughed.
Then there was the day that the delivery man came to my door to deliver a package that would require me going outside to show him where to place the large box. I asked him politely if he could please turn off his engine while unloading the package since I get ill when exposed to exhaust. He refused, and threw his head back and started laughing and laughing. He was so rude to me, I had to have a friend who was over go out and show him where to unload the package. Afterward my friend told me the delivery man kept laughing and laughing as she also explained my heath situation to him.
I’m sure most of us have been laughed at on more than one occasion since having MCS. This type of treatment has sure given me a new sense of compassion for others who have various disabilities and what they must go through when people laugh at them. It has also given me compassion for minority groups and others who may feel looked down upon at times for whatever it is that makes them feel different. Regardless of our disability, our ethnic background, etc., we are all equal in God’s sight. Galatians 3:28 says,
“There
is neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male nor female, for you are all one
in Christ Jesus.”
What should we do if we find
ourselves ridiculed or laughed at? Psalm
119:50-52 tells us where to find comfort when being mocked or ridiculed by
others:
“My comfort in my suffering is this: Your promise preserves my life. The arrogant mock me without restraint, but I do not turn from your law. I remember your ancient laws, O Lord, and I find comfort in them.”
The next
time you find yourself being mocked because of MCS, run to the word of God.
